HP Color LaserJet 2840 All-in-One Printer/Copier/Scanner/Fax (Q3950A#ABA) Review

We had no problems installing the printer on our network (Windows SBS Server 2000) or installing the management software on my PC. The printer works well for the our usage. There is newer technology available. But if you can get a discounted price, the printer works well.

Very Expensive to Maintain – S. Scholwinski – Houston, TX
We have been using this printer for the last 7 months. We have had to replace the drum 3 times and the toner five times. I have spent four times the amount on toner and drums then the printer is worth. Also, I have to reset the machine at least once every couple of days. Sometimes I have to reset it three to four times before it will continue to work properly. Fortunately, we had an extended warranty because a part went out on it that would’ve cost 0 to repair. Not sure how that is when the machine it self is less than that. I think there are much easier and better products on the market that are more affordable.

Horrible support – J. Andrews – washington DC
Don’t even think about buying this one. HP provides no support for this printer with Vista or Windows 7. That means all of the functions are essentially useless — save for printing simple pages. Complex pages won’t print with the generic software. No scanner support. HP Director not available.
Hard to imagine that HP thinks this will help their reputation.

HP LaserJet 2840 Now Obsolete – Piper 12056 – Upstate NY
I purchsed the 2840 in June 2008 after having done what I thought was diligent research. I wasn’t so concerned with its noise and sometimes temperamental attitude regarding its toner requirements. I wanted a reliable machine with each of the color printing, FAX and scan capabilities. I had to call tech support several times with varying degrees of success. The last time I called, “We do not support network printer installation over the telephone”. They did prior. I had to call them twice on it and they graciously walked me through the steps. But this must have “cost” them too much time–even though I had paid for the “unlimited tech support” up and above the initial year. So much for that.

Biggest problem? I’ve updated my computers to Windows OS 7. And HP does not and will not be providing drivers so that you can FAX and scan within Win 7. So, with the new operating system two out of three functions of ths “all-in-one” do not operate. It still prints… The machine is now obsolete. That the “…technology is nine years old…” (per tech support as of 10/09) was not revealed when I purchased it. HP failed to mention that the machine would be obsolete within 18 months as well. Do I feel I got ripped off from HP? You betcha!
